Corgi Complete Guide: The Dog with the Biggest Personality in a Small Body

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who have met a Corgi, and those who don't yet know what they're missing.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is objectively silly-looking — those stubby legs, that enormous butt, those satellite-dish ears. And yet they carry themselves with the confidence of a dog twice their size, because historically, they were the ones herding cattle. That personality-to-size ratio is unmatched.

Two Breeds, One Spirit

There are two Corgi breeds: Pembroke Welsh Corgi (the tailless one, Queen Elizabeth's favorite) and Cardigan Welsh Corgi (longer body, full tail). Pembrokes are far more common. Unless specified, "Corgi" almost always means Pembroke.

Personality

  • Intelligent and opinionated — They'll learn commands fast, then decide whether they feel like following them

  • Herding instinct — May try to "herd" children, other pets, or guests at parties

  • Vocal — Alert barkers. They will announce the mailman, a squirrel, and a leaf that moved

  • Affectionate — Deeply bonded to their family; not great at being alone for long periods

Key Facts

| Feature | Details |
|---------|---------|
| Weight | 25–30 lbs (11–14 kg) |
| Height | 10–12 inches |
| Lifespan | 12–13 years |
| Energy | Medium-high |
| Shedding | Heavy — the famous "Corgi glitter" |

The Real Talk

The butt: Yes, it's as good in person. Watching a Corgi run from behind is one of life's small joys.

The shedding: Corgis shed constantly, with two major seasonal blowouts per year. You will find their fur in places that make no physical sense. Invest in a good vacuum.

The exercise: Don't let the short legs fool you. Corgis need real daily exercise — at least an hour. Under-exercised Corgis become creative problem-solvers, which is rarely good for your furniture.

The back: Their long spine makes them prone to IVDD (intervertebral disc disease). Limit jumping, use ramps for furniture, and keep their weight healthy.

Monthly Cost

| Expense | Monthly |
|---------|---------|
| Food | $50–$80 |
| Grooming (deshedding) | $40–$70 |
| Pet insurance | $40–$80 |
| Vet (average) | $40–$70 |
| Total | $170–$300 |
